Man, that was my mantra while watching this. I really want the guy who made “Moon” to make another movie. I don’t really recognize that guy in “Mute.”

I thought about that and considered revising. You’re 100% right. The thing I kept coming back to when writing this is how that shared universe theme shapes the movie in a greater pop cultural context regardless of whether Jones had it in his head to draw those lines before the MCU was a thing and before, like, Ryan Murphy told us that every season of “American Horror Story” occurs in the same universe.

This probably requires its own separate article, but I really think the “Moon” connection does “Mute” no favors given the growing ubiquity of the shared universe as an aesthetic, which goes back to my comments about editing. If I could have given Jones one note on the script, it would have been to just jettison that element right away.

Let’s hope he regroups, and gets back to basics.

To be fair, Jones has been talking about Mute having a Moon connection since it came out in 2009 which is only a year after Marvel started their shared universe.
