I was going to gag over that "Influence of Andrei Tarkvosky" in the title--Who do they think they are? They're making a commercial kiddy comedy!--but then I saw it was just for the look of the trees, which do look pretty awesome in Ivan's Childhood. So I guess I'm ok with that. . . . . But that whole breaking the fourth wall joke sounds like it wouldn't work at all if it really comes out of nowhere, and all this talk--and not just from them, from all the other fairy tale movies as well--about how their version of the story is really clever and modern and non-traditional makes me kind of depressed. I like Shrek and Enchanted (and Fables) as much as the next guy, but is this really all we want out of fairy tales? Doesn't this ignore the true power fairy tales have, by mocking them and "updating" them all the time? The original classics have a romance and a magic (and go back far enough, gore and incest) that is unlike anything you'll get from this movie. Think of the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson or George MacDonald, --or Lewis Carroll or Kenneth Grahame: They all have a beauty and simplicity, a purity that makes them special and memorable that doesn't rely on clever in-jokes or modern sexual politics or anything like that. They communicate on a far more elemental level, and I don't see any films coming up soon that are attempting to capture it.
