The original 1930 version covers nearly the entire war from 1914 to 1918 and how the star went from an idealist young patriot ready for war to a combat veteran longing for peace and home. How can this be portrayed if the story only covers "the last 24 hours of the war."?
The original cannot be improved on. From the original uniforms that even showed the changing patterns from early to late war production, the extras were really veterans as the war had only ended 11 years before filming began.
That said, if the budget is a problem, there are hundreds of WWI reenactors that recreate a WWI battlefield twice a year in Pennsylvania. There is a realistic battlefield with trenches, shell craters, barbed wire, and partially destroyed buildings. They have many machine guns, authentic period aircraft, and as mentioned, hundreds of correctly equiped men and women that would be ready to be extras. Check out the Great War Association website.

This is absolutely unacceptable. No remake should be made for the original version of this film. Truly, society is just stupid if it even allows this to take place. There are some films that should not be remade period. Remake All Quiet on the Western Front, why not remake Star Wars? Stupid people, just stupid.

This is a tragedy. Lewis Milestone\’s film still stands up as a masterpiece today.
