Got a Tip?

Michael J. Fox Says A ‘Back To The Future’ Reboot Isn’t Needed But “Do What You Want… I Got Paid Already”

Of all the massively popular franchises that have been thrown around as possible reboot candidates, there’s one that has yet to happen and likely won’t— “Back to the Future.” It’s long been known the creators of “Back to the Future,” Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, are against the idea of a reboot or remake of their beloved franchise. However, if it was up to the stars of the film, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, perhaps a reboot would happen.

Speaking to Variety, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd talked about the status of the “Back to the Future” franchise and whether or not a sequel or reboot is in the cards. In the case of Fox, he doesn’t believe anymore “Back to the Future” films need to happen, but he’s perfectly fine if there are sequels or reboots in the future.

“I’m not fanatical,” Fox said. “Do what you want. It’s your movie. I got paid already.”

“I don’t think it needs to be,” he added. “I think Bob and Bob have been really smart about that. I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”

Christopher Lloyd, who plays Doc Brown in the franchise, is not only okay if there’s ever a sequel in the future but he’s also down to star in it. Obviously, the script would have to be right.

“I would love to do a sequel, but I think Bob Zemeckis and [producer Steven] Spielberg felt that they told the story in the three episodes,” Lloyd said. “But if somebody has a brilliant idea that would justify a fourth film it might happen.”

Fans of the franchise know that “Back to the Future” ended with a third film set in the late-1800s. That film ended the stories of Doc Brown and Marty McFly, but it could have easily led to even more adventures. However, a fourth film was never officially in the works. For Fox, this was probably for the best, as his Parkinson’s had started to show its early signs, and it might have prevented him from agreeing to another film.

“I’m sure somebody thought about it,” Fox explained about a fourth film. “But I was in the early stages of Parkinson’s at that point, so I don’t know that I would have wanted to take that on. Right after ‘Part Three’ had done well, there might have been conversations about it, but I never got involved in them.”

So, as it stands now, the “Back to the Future” film franchise seemingly will end with only three films. But if a reboot or sequel happens in the future, neither Lloyd nor Fox are against it, and not only that, you might actually get one of them to star in the film.
