Heaven's Gate is Cimino's masterpiece, not the macho racist fantasy that is The Deer Hunter. A Criterion blu-ray will be most welcome, but I hope the film remains in 35mm circulation on the rep circuit.

I may not be a fan of Heaven's Gate but I'll definitely get a Criterion release of that film. I wanna see the 2 1/2 hour version that came out after the original version bombed just to compare and contrast.

This is glorious news. The film is a masterpiece and has some of the most gorgeous cinematography in the history of cinema. Once a Criterion edition is released, those who never gave the film a passing glance will be declaring it one of the greatest films ever made, as they should.

Will Michael Cimino ever make anohter movie? Wasn't he gonna make Man's Fate?
also I do not think he had a sex change but rather bad plastic surgeory?
He released a book in Italy but I wonder if it is yet to be translated and/or released here in the United States.
His commentary for Year of the Dragon is amazing.

Will we ever see the 5 hr and 20 mintue version of Heavens Gate. I believe Cimino shot a battle sequence alone that is like a hour long

If "cinema history" were to get it right, then Thunderbolt and Lightfoot would be seen as Cimino's masterpiece.

Heaven's Gate is a great film, I don't care what anyone says. It's got some flaws, but it's got a hypnotic effect on me when I watch it, like Barry Lyndon. Watch it with an open mind.

Having seen the 219' cut, I can say it was not as bad as the critics would have you think. In my opinion the backlash was rooted more on Cimino's excesses (alleged or not). There's an interesting documentary about the production: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424089/
