It never sounds like he's actually apologizing in the sense of "I apologize of having unleashed this movie onto mankind".

He's simply stating that the third act could have been better if he had been given more time.

IMHO.

That being said, I enjoy Armageddon for what it is. The premise with the oild drillers and the open flame fires on an asteroid without oxygen make it so cheesy you either want to enjoy it or you're not going to be happy with it. It's harmless "Americans save the world" movie.

No one ever blamed the Japanese that they saved us from Gojira so many times.

Double IMHO.
