\’In the past, movies like this would never see the light of day because of the bureaucracies of movie theaters. Films like "Beasts of No Nation" do not come from places where people frequent movie theaters\’ Um, what are you talking about? This is a high profile film directed by someone hot on the heels of a hit TV series and starring the guy who\’s in serious consideration to play James Bond.

It\’s not just the major chains that will boycott this. I work for an independent theatre chain and our policy is to not play films released VOD simultaneously with theatrical debuts.

It seems most of you are missing the point. In the past, movies like this would never see the light of day because of the bureaucracies of movie theaters. The more access we have to amazing content, the better.

Also, I think the digital model could eventually hurt the impact of the business. When I hear people talk about TV shows or movies, after watching them on Netflix it\’s like they don\’t care. But after watching those TV Shows live, or movies in theaters, it\’s as if they had a religious experience.

I am absolutely 100% pro-theater. While the VOD/Netflix/Amazon type streaming is a good platform, especially for indies, nothing compares to seeing a movie on a big screen. I use Netflix and Amazon but I absolutely hate the idea of theaters being a second choice. It is a phenomenal experience watching films on a big screen, in the theater environment. Watching Her, Only God Forgives, and Gravity on a small screen is definitely not the same as it would be seeing them in a theater.

This article seems very anti-theater/pro-Netflix. And I\’m marveled at this. If you are a real movie buff, you would oppose this movie. For people like myself, the theater is a place to unwind and relax for a few hours to escape the aggravations of everyday life and Netflix is trying to take that away from us, which they shouldnt. That\’s why I\’m siding with the theaters.

PS definitly support your indie theaters too.

Why not give the theater owners first dibs on opening weekend. When Monday roles around, it can open to all streaming platforms.
