Stunning score. Track 11, 'Raven Rock' is reminiscent of the best of Giacchino's work on 'Lost' and John Barry; pure soaring string heaven. This score surprised me with its emotional weight. Could have easily been nothing but repetitive bass/drum keys like so many techno-thrillers, but this really was so evidently a labor of love. It shows. Deeply affecting.

It sounds like he had a torrid time with the studio (record companies sometimes behave the same way), but I for one am glad he chucked the kitchen sink at the song 'Oblivion'. It gets better and better each time I hear it, and Susanne Sundfor's singing takes it to another plane from most epic movie songs. Superb, from a brilliant songwriter, and I hope Anthony goes from strength to strength.

That's the problem when the studio choose people based on their talent and success out there but don't trust the reason why they became so successful to begin with. They think the audience is stupid and will go see the fucking movie blindly trusting the appealing names in the credits. Well they made a ton of cash anyway so they must be right i guess. I respect Gonzales open hearted comments on his work on the film. If he does a movie score in the future, maybe i'll choose more wisely with who he work for.

I think a lot of that type of relationship depends on which studio/producers you're dealing with. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had free reign to do basically what they wanted, and I guess you could say it was because the higher ups felt confident that they would produce something amazing.

The guy has some balls to be honest about being dumbed down by his employers. Some tracks sound more like riffs on INCEPTION-bram than others, yes; however, some tracks are quite good e.g. StarWaves and I'm Sending You Away.

And this is why it's generally a poor decision to hire pop bands to "score" films. What they do is intrinsically different from what professional film composers do every single day on the job.

Pop bands are great. Let them do that. But it should be no surprise what the demands are when placed in to a conventional film scoring environment, particularly on massive budget scale films. this is part of the gig, and it's why, generally speaking, there are very few composers who do this, and/or are capable of doing this job.

Sounds like the executives on this movie were too scared he'd make the score too "weird" if he was given total control. Shame, because I was really looking forward to that aspect of the film. I thought the movie itself was mediocre and the score wasn't much better. I could hear hints of M83 in the music, but it never went far enough like I wanted it to. Daft Punk on the other hand, did a great job of balancing movie score mixed with some of their techno beats.
