1) TLA had a 40M 3-Day (Friday-Sunday) Box Office opening and 69.3M 5-Day (Thursday-Monday) Opening. It didnt do 70M in a normal 3 Day Weekend. (And it is falling even further in its 2nd weekend due to the bad word-of-mouth.)
2) The opening was due to the popularity of the source material which has a huge fanbase and nothing to be with M.Knight. As always with these articles, not enough credit goes to the popularity of the Airbender TV series.
3) The movie has a production of $150M and advertising budget of 130M (remember the Super Bowl ad). The figure for the advertising budget is from the LA Times :
articles.latimes.com/2010/jun/25/business/la-fi-ct-airbender-20100625
4) Paramount spent that huge amount in advertising because it was looking for a Harry Potter-type franchise (or at least a trilogy). And that is not going to happen as this movie will struggle to break even.

Why would Paramount finance another TLA movie to 'break even' when there are movie opportunties to spend their money on? M Knight ruined the Airbender movie franchise.

Are you serious?! He's producing a terrible interpretation of a great story. Possibly the best IP that Nickelodeon has or ever will have. All this money is just awarding Hollywood for bad quality movies. We only have ourselves to blame when we see Transformers 12.

if it makes the money, why not let him finish the tale. Perhaps dropping the crappy and likely not cheap 3d conversion and reducing the marketing budget (come on with the Internet do you really need to spend that much)
leaving it as it is would be like canceling a tv show the day after you had the bad guy fire the gun at the hero (without showing if it was a good hit or not)

And who knows, the second film might actually be better than the first now that all that backstory and junk is out of the way. Rather like how the third Twilight is actually quite good but the first two had so much setting up that that's all it was. and was rather boring on its own
