Say what you will, everyone has their own opinion, but mine happens to be that the atmosphere and overall tone of The Village was vastly underapprciated. Obviously it's no Kubrick or Antonioni mastery but the fact that people pretty much blew it off because they claimed they could see the twist coming – which is far from even the best thing about the film – is lame.

Lots of cinephiles have appreciated his pre-tentpole, post-Sixth Sense pictures. Cahiers du Cinema had Lady in the Water tied at number 6 on their Top 10 for 2006. I didn't like that one so much, but I really enjoyed The Happening, which indeed was brimming over with dread

As absurd as it may seem on its face, THE HAPPENING feels like a Stephen King cocktail napkin-plot soaked in Antonioni's patented existential dread — Wahlberg as a frustrated high school science teacher with a shrew for a wife fleeing an invisible force of suicidal despair deeper into a pastoral landscape of rubes and nihilists.
