So you basis is the actor know what he wants more than the director? GTFO with that. It’s the director and writer that create the story. The actor brings the nuance to the character.

you do realise that there’s been a shift in society right? That our values and tastes have changed? like for instance the switch between Tim Burton’s Batman and Chris Nolan’s? Ppl don’t want low stakes, the good guys always win with little or no loss to them in the end. If you want to be so happy at the end of a movie, go watch something meant for 6 yr olds. I can only assume you loathe the negative outcomes on game of thrones.

And people insist on calling Rey a Mary Sue. Damn, she had more training on combat than Luke did! Her knowledge of the Force is intuitive like Leia showed in The Empire Strikes Back – also, she’s not alone on that as Kylo has been revealed to have it grown in him as well before being corrupted by Snoke.

The question is why didn’t the filmmakers edit out at least 30 minutes before releasing it into theaters? Even with 30 less minutes you’d still have the Luke Skywalker problem.

that’s warped but your opinion – if the fucking STAR has ISSUES with HIS CHARACTER you best bet the movie has problems. When you look at who alive and who’s dead in reality and fiction – THAT should tell you were in even more trouble. Hey just cuz you’re old doesn’t mean you’re not one of idiots people have turned into today…this movie didn’t need to be spelled out for us. It’s too long and dull and mopey and phoney. It’s forced – so forced – and cliched and alot of it pisses on everything that came before it while trying to nod it. I will agree that there is a good movie in here but THIS is NOT it. This movie was predictable at every turn. Then we’re left with the two biggest questions being un answered and meaningless…EVEN if it IS just ‘so it seems’ and there’s more in store. That’s b.s. There’s ZERO fun or joy in this movie… Johnson made a prequel. Period. The prequels needed to be fixed. THERE. We’re done and you have nothing more to say but “yeah but I liked it”. Well, to quote Arnold in End of Days “Good for you.” Cuz the prequels sucked. Gems INSIDE but what we got sucked…and he loves ’em.

IMO no one who grew with originals can be happy everyone’s lives are SHIT. Period. So go to hell on that one first and foremost Disney. How happy are we at the end of Jedi? If these two sequels had been released back in the day there’s NO way in hell they’d look anything like these.. Lucas was kind of smarter going the other way first…he just executed it poorly. You can like what you like just as my opinion is just mine but imo I think the peeps who like this are younger cats who’ve been raised on shit for the last 10-15 yrs… Peeps who don’t like it – saw the originals in their original run at some age… so basically age. Not literally cuz obviously 10 people are now just going to be like I’m 40 and I loved it. Good for you all cuz you still don’t add up to the numbers I’m talking about vs the hatred. This isn’t just any other movie… this is SW 8! After the last two which were enjoyable…the prequel hate which wasn’t like this… I’d the passion lies with the darkside on this and will prevail over the light. Unless the haters ever see my cut and are returned to the light. I’ll never stop saying it – at 2hrs it’s really good. If you have any knack for editing and timing you should be able to work the movie into roughly 2hrs like I did. Recognize the fluff then cut it. It should all fall into place. This was so bad it was the easiest of the 10 films to edit. Try it…when the blu ray comes out that is 😉

Cuz at 2hrs it’s pretty damn good. Vowed never to watch the theatrical again and throw out star wars lol but I’ve recut all 9 other movies at 2hrs each…and this hurt too much to just throw away so I re-edited it in 2 days and I love it (for what it is) and accept it now. Watched it 6 times already and I’ll watch it again at the drop of a hat. It’s not perfect but only the middle suffers still (and that’s Rose’s fault so no fixing that by phanom editing her out jar jar style – which I hate), the first 30 mins are AMAZING, and the last part of the movie is epic now… It should have ended like emipire pullingo ut their spaceraft into space not that little boy nonsense…that dropped my jaw to the floor. Sat there stunned for 5 mins after that (and I had already said F this movie at shirtless Kylo Ren LOL)…

Just another reason to not let a review-aggregator site tell you if a movie is good or not. People treat RT like it’s linked to the will of the gods themselves. I’ve watched movies which had 30-40% there which I loved and watched ones with 90% which nigh-on made me fall asleep. Either way its FAR from a fool-proof way to judge a movie.

FORCE AWAKENS wasn’t high art but it was at least SATISFYING on a base level. I agree that Kylo Ren is the best character this series currently has to work with.

I agree with ppl who didn’t like it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It contributes more to the conversation IMO. At least we still have Chewie 🙂 (still waiting for him to go on an ass kicking spree at some point in all these movies)

Mark Hamill may not have the greatest acting range, but in the OT he was still a compelling and identifiable hero. His depiction in LAST JEDI makes zero sense, and neither does his unsatisfying exit. It boggles my mind that this series wouldn’t want to keep Hamill around as the ONE legacy player going forward into this new saga. If people watch this movie and are totally satisfied with how everything was handled, that’s cool. I wasn’t.

I think you have some valid points, but this isn’t exactly high art either. I would say that Luke in the original movies isn’t a very complex character either. I would say Keylo Ren is a much more interesting character than Darth Vader too so there’s that to appreciate. Darth was just bad ass.. which is never a bad thing either.

I think what’s missing with Luke’s character is the entire Jedi training academy he formed and ran. I think there’s a pressure of having that responsibility and feeling like so much relied on him being successful really weighed on him and his failure really changed him.
Doubt crept in where it once wasn’t there…at least that’s how I read into it.
So yeah he’s older, beaten down with failing and different than he was in his youth. It;s plausible to me.

Star Wars has always had some flat characters. I mean the original triology is pretty darn flat without Han IMO. Harrison Ford brought 80% of the charaisma and fun to those movies. The other 20% was the just the presence of Darth Vader.

I love STAR WARS. Here are some issues I have with LAST JEDI, if you really want to know:

There are so many issues but they start with the fact that the movie’s 2.5 hours long and feels like an easy 30-45 minutes could have been cut no problem. As indicated in the article, the representation of Luke doesn’t jive with ANY previous depictions in the original trilogy. As a character, Rey is a complete washout, with no discernible flaws or compelling agency that define most interesting characters. Gripes that she was a ‘Mary Sue’ in FORCE AWAKENS are impossible to defend now.

Attempts at post-modern humor (“Can you hear me now”, Luke calling a lightsaber a “laser sword”, Hux getting force-choked and falling down like a cartoon, Luke drinking alien tit milk) played to a dead-quiet packed house. As a propulsive action spectacle it mostly fails, especially when the movie goes into a literal coma for 90 minutes. Central dramatic centerpiece of the film; Rey and Luke, plays out without any forward trajectory or chemistry between the performers and builds to a murky, unsatisfying anti-climax. I’m really just skimming the surface here, but I could dig deeper into the useless new characters, the narrative dead ends, the lack of visual imagination in terms of ships, creatures or new planets, etc.

Even though the prequel storylines are shit, I can at least revisit them for their over-abundance of visual imagination. The worlds and alien species Lucas created fill out the frame and at least give you something completely new to look at every other scene. There is literally nothing calling me back to LAST JEDI.

I’m not on here trying to troll anyone. I’m just stating my personal opinion. Everyone needs to chill tfo.
