Yeah, he can be grossly overrated and by all accounts, he didn't know what he wanted on Slugger's Wife and was constantly re-writing on the set. Poor Ashby also wasn't allowed to improvise or change a word. Was a bad situation for him like pretty much every '80s film he tackled. The last half of that book is depressing.

Given that Neil Simon wrote the screenplay, this can be seen as a welcome improvement.
