Oldboy is hardly a masterpiece. If people ACTUALLY watched it instead of parroting what everyone else thinks they'd realize that it's not that good. It's over-stylized, has a laughable hypnisis subplot and the villain's plot isn't that interesting. Spielberg and Smith could have reinterpreted the source material (yes, Oldboy is an adaption) and provided something new. This project's not happening anymore, but the reverence for the film needs to stop.

They could always do a "Zinda", the unofficial Bollywood remake... which was apparently so heavily copied that some scenes were shot-for-shot.... though they butchered the twist at the end to make it less controversial

And just to clarify, I wasn't implying that Ritchie and Bay would make a good Oldboy remake but that it would make some sense given their respective oeuvres that they would be interested in it.

Can anyone explain to me how, of all people, Steven Spielberg and Will Smith watched Oldboy and said, "Yes, this is something we should remake!" I just don't get what they want to do with it. Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham, sure. Michael Bay and Nicolas Cage, definitely. But Spielberg and Will Smith?! It's like Ron Howard remaking Irreversible.
