Nearly every person who went through the American high school system is familiar with iconic author Kurt Vonnegut. Some walk away as fans of his work. Filmmaker Robert Weide (“Curb Your Enthusiasm“) took things one step further — he partnered with Vonnegut on a decades-long journey to chronicle his life and career in the upcoming documentary “Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time.”

Weide approached the author in 1988 as a mere 23-year-old with the idea for the documentary. What followed was a life-long friendship filled with rich conversations, which are documented in the film. “Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time” spans across the author’s life, chronicling his upbringing, his time in the war, his early struggles as a writer to the publication of his masterpiece, “Slaughterhouse-Five.” The documentary is just as much about Weide’s journey getting to know Vonnegut as it is about the author’s life.
Weide produced and wrote the documentary. He cowrote the film with Don Argott (“Last Days Here“). Here’s the synopsis for “Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time”:
“Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time” dives into the author’s upbringing and his creative output, spanning his childhood in Indianapolis, his experience as a prisoner of war in World War II, his marriage, family and divorce, his early careers as a publicist for General Electric and a car salesman, and his long years as a struggling writer, leading to eventual superstardom in 1969 following the publication of his lightning-bolt anti-war novel Slaughterhouse-Five (which would later be adapted into the 1972 movie from George Roy Hill).
“Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time” will make its premiere as part of the lineup for Doc NYC. IFC will then be releasing the documentary in theaters and video on demand on November 19. Take a look at the trailer below.
