The characters ARE supposed to be unlikable monsters. It's a gothic novel, not a romantic one.

Nevertheless, for some reason, some women view him as a Mr. Darcy-type, perhaps because his character has been softened a great deal in previous movie adaptations.

Actually, I'll be far more interested if they depict him as the puppy-murdering, woman and child abusing monster that he is in the novel.
