I agree with everything, even though I enjoyed watching the film, but there's one thing that can be explained - the fact that Magda is a lauded female novelist pre-women's lib is unremarked upon because it's unremarkable in socialist block countries - women's lib did not happen here because one of the purported victories of socialism was the liberation of women in one go. They could be anything (except important political figures it seems), and there were in fact successful female authors before the 70s.

Just came from a screening. And immediately jumped on the net to see reviews. The first thing I saw was somebody lauding the 'faultless direction'. Dismayed, I dug a little deeper and found this, which tallies much, much more closely with my experience of the film. The dubbing. The dialogue. All as you say. The first sign of trouble was trumpted loud and clear when Gedeck's character recognises Mirren's place of origin 'because of the way she pronounces her As' - when Mirren's using her regular English accent and Gedeck her German. That was my uh-oh moment, and sadly things didn't improve.
