More than five years after the release of “Avengers: Endgame,” there are many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans who say that Thanos is the best villain. And there are many of those people who would love to see Josh Brolin return as the character in a future project. But for that to happen, Brolin has some caveats.
Speaking to Collider, Josh Brolin talked about what it would take for him to want to return as Thanos in the MCU. Basically, much like his thought process for returning for the “Sicario” sequel, Brolin needs to make sure there’s a good story reason for Thanos to return. Then again, he also said that he’s willing to do anything if the Russos ask.
“I’m not kidding — There’s a thing with playing Thanos. It’s like, ‘Oh, they’re gonna bring Thanos back.’ It’s like ‘Sicario;’ it has to be right,” said Brolin. “It’s like Ryan Reynolds and I talking about Taylor Swift and we should be talking about ‘Deadpool 4.’ But we go back and forth. Again, it’s what in his mind fits, what in my mind fits. Thanos has to fit if you’re going to bring him back. I would do anything that the Russos wanted me to do.”
Obviously, this doesn’t mean that the Russos are guaranteed to ask Brolin to return for “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Avengers: Secret Wars.” However, if the directors and Marvel wanted it to happen, the actor is willing to come back.
Honestly, it would be silly to bring back Thanos in a meaningful way. The story told in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” told the Thanos story in a wonderful way with a solid conclusion. There’s really no need to bring back the character. Then again, this is the studio who is bringing back Robert Downey, Jr. to play Doctor Doom. So, anything’s possible.
We’ll have to wait and see if that happens. It would probably be more likely to see Brolin’s Cable return in a future ‘Deadpool’ film, if that ever becomes a thing.
