How did this one note joke get to become a trilogy?

The first film works in fits & starts (mostly the first 40 minutes) but I wouldn\’t call it a good movie.

Tommy Lee Jones is 64 and even though Josh Brolin is 43, he is playing Agent K when he is supposed to be over 40 years younger.

They should have cast one of the below rising young actors (and appropriate in terms of age) to play the younger Agent K:
Shia LaBeouf, Zac Efron, Anton Yelchin, Ed Westwick, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Emile Hirsch
