It's not that it's been done, it's that it's practically convention. It was David Torn's career for a couple decades before he established himself as a composer. Almost every score since the 90's (especially in tv) uses elec guitars in this way, sometimes instead of orchestra. Asche & Spencer do it really well (Monster's Ball is amazing sounding), as does Cliff Martinez, Clint Mansell, etc.

I hope he comes up with some cool crazy ass sounding shit, just wish new-to-film musicians would have a little more awareness.
