Unless they've changed the order in the script, HOWARD is the oldest brother in the book. He's the one who fights in WW1.

The inside flap of the hardcover edition of the book even gets the order wrong, referring to Forrest as the oldest. But if you read the book, it's clear that he's not. The text itself specifically says that Howard is the "oldest brother."
