The qualities that make the original so compelling – deathly slow pace, glacial mimimalism, characterisation almost entirely inferential – are the kiss of death in commercial American filmaking. Its hard to see how you could sell a remark without betraying the original aesthetic. That said, I'm glad Woo isn't directing – however much he admires Melville, that was a travesty waiting to happen.
