The budget on the movie is AT LEAST $300M, probably closer to $400M and that\’s before marketing. Disney\’s been telling everyone it\’s $200M, but that\’s bull and it doesn\’t surprise me that The New Yorker got a more realistic figure, as their fact checkers are no joke. Ironic that the braintrust at Disney are nickel and diming a $200M movie with Johnny Depp but not a $400M one with Taylor Kitsch. Boggles the mind.

I liked what I saw in the Previews so far, coming from someone who has read all the books in this series, as well as a few others by Edgar Rice Burroughs. From what I\’ve been reading from comments from those who have seen the more extensive not-public footage, and looking at the maquettes of the characters, I feel good that this movie will not disappoint. I expect something epic and grand, like Star Wars (only with excellent directing) and Avatar, just, on Mars, about John Carter and Dejah Thoris, and wonderful Woola and the Tharks and the giant apes. It should be a BLAST!!!

The people complaining that Taylor Kitsch isn\’t a draw
seem to have forgotten that Avatar\’s Sam Worthington
and Zoe Saldana weren\’t A-List actors and still aren\’t.
If Stanton does the job right, people will come, just the
way people had faith in James Cameron. On the other
hand, I think it was a mistake to let The New Yorker toss
that $700 million figure around. Excellent article by the way,
and it did whet my appetite in a way the trailer didn\’t, but
that figure will only bring all the naysayers out of the woodwork.

I was underwhelmed with the footage I\’ve seen so far. However, I have great faith in Stanton\’s instincts. What I suspect is they\’ve coarse corrected the film from being decent to being good.

Let\’s hope that\’s true.

The trailer looks so A-Z terribly bad, the art work cheesy, the character design poor, the plot another last minute you-are-the-only-one-who-can-save-the-world-bullshit — I wonder if this can work even after the most extensive reshoots.
