Two things make sense about the Weinstein push for Christoph Waltz: a) Phoenix's nomination is a foregone conclusion, they'd only have to campaign for a win, and if he's backtracking, he'd be the only WC release in Best Actor contention; The fifth slot is a bit tenuous, so of course Weinstein will push someone -- their whole business is built on Oscar season and b). The Master was more of a Megan Ellison production; PTA thwarted the type of release schedule that Harvey wanted and "Django Unchained" has been his property since inception; likewise, Tarantino has been in the Harvey wheelhouse for 15 years.

All things considered, I highly doubt that when the nominations come that Harvey will turn his back on his (likely) only Best Actor contender.
