Jennifer Lawrence is clearly a fan of raunchy R-rated comedies. The type of comedies that don’t get big studio releases in theaters. Hell, there have been plenty of times she’s talked openly about her love of Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s early comedies. So, it’s not a shock that her first true comedy, “No Hard Feelings,” has a similar tone (and rating) as those 2000s-era hits. But when you do an R-rated comedy, Lawrence thinks there’s really no way to avoid offending people.
Speaking to Sky News, Jennifer Lawrence opened up about how her new film, “No Hard Feelings,” is an R-rated comedy with “good, old-fashioned laughs.” And she understands that this sort of comedy has the chance to offend people, but Lawrence thinks the film does a good job of balancing just who gets made fun of.
“I think it’s time for a good, old-fashioned laugh, and it really is hard to make a comedy where you’re not offending people,” said Lawrence. “Everybody in some sense will be offended by this film. You’re welcome.”
She added, “Something we learned from the old-time comedies is mean comedy is not really funny, making somebody feel bad about themselves – other than me making fun of me. But the way that we did it is fine, we figured it out.”
Judging by the first few days of the film’s box office run, it appears Lawrence has cracked the code for how to release an adult comedy in today’s climate. Sure, the film isn’t going to do massive numbers like those aforementioned McKay/Ferrell comedies, but in terms of 2020s releases, it’s doing pretty well. So, it would appear the actress is onto something with not being terribly afraid to offend some people.
“No Hard Feelings” is in theaters now.
