I’m a huge fan of Nichols in general though, and especially of Take Shelter, Mud and Midnight Special, which are three of the most impressive American films I’ve seen the last decade (Shotgun Stories also has its moments, and is a very strong debut).

Anyway yeah, Midnight Special was beautifully assembled and honestly one of the most overlooked films to come out in 2016. I can’t really think how Nichols could’ve been improved whilst still maintaining his integrity – in other words, if the studio had taken over it would’ve been a glossy blockbuster. Maybe making WB more money, sure, but it’d be quickly forgotten. This is one recent sci-fi that really deserves to be remembered in the ensuing years.
