When I first saw Life Aquatic, I loved it, and thought it was Anderson\’s funniest film since Bottle Rocket. But even though it might be more laugh out loud funny than Rushmore and Royal Tenebaums, on subsequent viewings it has shown it weaknesses, something those other two films don\’t have. Now when I first saw Darjeeling Limited, I was disappointed. On subsequent viewings of that film, I have grown to appreciate it more, although I still find it to be Anderson\’s weakest.

Here\’s my preference:
Rushmore
Royal Tenebaums
Bottle Rocket
The Life Aquatic
Darjeeling Limited

I love Fantastic Mr. Fox too, but it is hard to throw it in the rankings due to it being animated.

the life aquatic was beyond disappointing. the lack of chemistry blanchett had on screen with everyone, the accent of wilson\’s, it was awful. the dumb shark……..? if it weren\’t for the iggy pop interlude and the i\’m a pepper t-shirt i would have wanted a refund.

Life Aquatic seems to always start this kind of conversation. Personally it\’s my second favorite movie by him and I think it\’s absolutely beautiful. I\’ve met people who feel the same way, but also plenty like Oli who didn\’t like it at all.

Love the life aquatic, love darjeeling limited. i dont know what people felt was missing in those movies that was in bottle rocket, rushmore, tenenbaums. They\’re different sure but they\’re so enjoyable–funny, odd, highly detailed, great writing and have some pretty cool cathartic moments

Great piece overall, but the speculation about Cannes 2012 feels baseless since it\’s so far off and no previous Anderson film has premiered there. That would be great, though.

The Life Aquatic did have pacing/structure issues to its core, but overall is a really fun film with an amazing performance by Murray. So no, not a misfire.

I\’m really looking forward to Moonrise Kingdom!

Anderson has said multiple times that he never wants to make a film without Owen Wilson, so you can bet on it that Wilson will at least have a cameo or small role in Moonrise Kingdom.

I have to say, I wasn\’t a fan of \”Life Aquatic\” at first but subsequent viewings I found the film far more endearing. Certainly not top tier Anderson but I think it\’s still pretty strong and somewhat underrated.
