I think it was the script. The script\’s basic idea — single, needy, neurotic mom falls instantaneously for falsely-imprisoned-convict-with-a-heart-of-gold — it was just weak. Weak, trite, romantic balderdash. I don\’t think it was workable for the moment Jason Reitman fell for the script (which as I recall was when he was in the beginnings of a divorce — never make important decisions when pummelled by loss!) I like JR, but he\’s best with scripts that he doesn\’t write.

Am I the only one who thought Labor Day was excellent? It obviously wasn't Reitman's usual genre but I found it to be subtle and powerful. I was ready to hate it and I thoroughly enjoyed it, whereas with Young Adult I was ready to love it and was left disappointed.

It seems like the movie was universally panned. If it was any good it would have found an audience, despite the marketing. So I don't think Reitman has anyone to blame but himself.

It's great when a filmmaker goes out of his/her range to go into uncharted territory. Unfortunately, these stumbling blocks are necessary for them to fully realize what they are good at. Spielberg said this of "1941," then turned around "Raiders."

Sometimes, the stumbling never seems to stop though. Thinking about a guy who specialized in twist endings…

Young Adult didn't flop at the box office? It was made on a tiny budget and earned its budget back. Sure it didn't make bank but it didn't exactly flop.
