(To put myself into context, I make art films). I think James Gunn is referring to the artistic elite and actually find him correct on this point. Dan Gilroy can make Nightcrawler and NOT talk about superhero movies. They\’re getting the money, but they\’re not just art but a product as well.

"Audiences are starving for something that\’s thoughtful and thought-provoking, and they\’re not getting it with yet another Spiderman reboot." Clearly not if Marvel are still hitting hundreds of millions and Nightcrawler isn\’t.

I can make art films, and I can move up into small budget independent films and they superhero movies can continue to be made and not receive any awards regarding their merit in art and people can still have independent movies. The two are coexisting fine, VOD is bringing in a new era of production and distribution for low budget indies. The superhero trend will die just like dance movies.

Some people seem to miss the point. The $100 million that\’s spent on some comic book junk movie could fund 10 indies. If you want mindless superhero action, turn on your TV, there\’s plenty of it, 24/7. Audiences are starving for something that\’s thoughtful and thought-provoking, and they\’re not getting it with yet another Spiderman reboot. Gunn showed himself to be a poor sport and a narrow-minded filmmaker. He should have more respect for his colleagues and learn to choose his battles.

So many film makers hold a grudge because the ‘Super hero’ films get all of the money and the ‘serious’ independent films go hungry for money. We should all just get over it. It’s a business, an industry, the pursuit of the filthy lucre. If you really want that small movie made, you get your financing. The options are there. Even Jack Black made a passion film last year (And a fine one at that). We should all stop through snide remarks and support each other in our endeavors.
But in some funny way we are all still in high school, eh? Geeks and jocks…

Really silly to take any of these comments seriously. Film-makers should make the movies they like and want to make. If people don\’t want to be part of a superhero franchise then it\’s not necessarily snobbery it\’s just not for them. But Gunn railing against "the elite" shows a surprisingly thin skin and is itself a form of reverse snobbery.
