"My Own Private Idaho" has not yet been released on Blu Ray. I've read that Criterion had produced an elaborate DVD release with extensive bonus material including a second disc and a book. James Franco should team up with Criterion and have them release his footage as a (second or third) companion disc to a Criterion Blu Ray release of the original Gus Van Sant film, or as a limited-edition bonus companion piece. While I would unquestionably want to add a Criterion Blu Ray release of the film to my collection, James Franco's caring archival of Phoenix's outtakes would make that a must-have pre-order.

Van Sant's film is, if not universally accepted as a masterpiece, then certainly a cult classic that holds a profound and haunting place in the hearts and memories of those who were contemporaries of River Phoenix, like myself, and who had come to see him as one of the great actors of our generation. My appreciation to James Franco for apparently seeing in Phoenix what I do, and for, as I do, wanting to see more of him. It would be a travesty to have saved all that footage, digitized it, and then not let those of us who hold all of these artists in high regard have a chance to experience it; how tragically ironic would it be to have it lost to time even after all that effort to preserve and artistically edit it.

Astonishingly, virtually none of Phoenix's films are available on Blu Ray, I'm thinking particularly of "Running On Empty," "The Mosquito Coast," "Dogfight," "Silent Tongue," "Dark Blood," not even the all-star "I Love You To Death."

I think it should be released. I can't think of anyone who did not like or love River. It would be nice to see him again in a (new film so to speak) new film. It won't hurt him, it will bring him back in something new. It will remind us of what once was, and how it can be again. Love you River.

I hope it get released..I was able to watch James Franck and mr Gus van sant talking about this incredible project, they had the best of the intentions to released this. James Franco seems to be following the visionary foot step of great film directors like Gus and Korine, and it is fascinating. I was also able to see some amazing photography of the deleted footages of My own private Idaho which I believe to be a masterpiece . Phoenix River was so giving to my my own private Idaho, which touched many who worked with him. I think it would be wonderful for this to be released to the public.I am crossing my fingers.

How does James Franco manage limited time to handle so many things. After all, River Phoenix is worthy of being memorized, in some ways. I wish gonna get some climpses of this film some time.
