One, Ellroy\'s comments impugn David Fincher\'s directorial ability, because if you call into question the actors performances, and given Fincher\'s noted Kubrick-like control of his actors and his set, then you\'re basically saying Fincher cannot direct actors, which is balderdash.

Two, Ellroy is noted for his rat-a-tat dialogue which doesn\'t necessarily translate well to the screen, often it comes across as sounding like mock-dialogue from a Warners gangster spoof (and note, I love the guy\'s books, but what works on page, may not on screen). I\'ve always tried to figure out the admiration these guys have for each other (Fincher and Ellroy and vice versa) because their style\'s are really distinct from one another.

That said, the performances in "Zodiac" from all three leads are spot on for the film (who knows if Avery was that manic in real life, but it certainly is Robert Downey Jr\'s character based on a real person, and not a real person per se). It\'s well known that on "Zodiac" Fincher went a little overboard with multiple takes, a al Kubrick, but it shows in what amounts to very naturalistic performances from Gyllenhaal and Ruffalo (and Downey too, though again, when you hire RDJ, you\'re getting RDJ\'s own self in that character role... he\'s not one of those guys that loses himself in the role and disappears, y\'know).

"Zodiac" is considered a masterpiece (an appraisal that grows with every year) because it\'s more than just a crime procedural, more than just an actor\'s showcase, and more than a standard serial killer movie... it\'s really an impressive work about obsession and the need to understand something that can\'t be understood regardless of the cost. It\'s one of the most remarkable movies of the 21st century, and will only gain in stature over time.

Zodiac is one the best films of the past 20 years. While I live Ellroy\'s books and read almost everything he publishes, I just disagree with his assessment on the "acting." I thought Gyllenhaal was perfect - the character is in over his head, and the actor pulls the audience in to his obsessive need to KNOW who did this. Ruffalo was great b/c he didn\'t overplay the role and you could sense his growing frustration, anger and finally resignation (like Tommy Lee Jones\' character in No Country for Old Men). Downey, Jr. was good but not great - he played his usual snarky self. But that didn\'t hurt the movie in my opinion. Just a great film - like a page-turning book you stay up all night for.

He doesn\'t mince his words does he, Ellroy? I think it\'s a pretty disingenuous thing to say, and indeed pretty contradictory as how can it be such a great film if all the principals are no good in it?

Definitely true in the case of Gyllenhaal, who always seemed wrong in that part to me (he\'s the one guy in the picture who instantly feels like an ACTOR, whereas the rest melt into the material), but Downey Jr is pretty great, and Ruffalo gave one of his career best performances (has he ever been as good since?) Also agree that Zodiac is Fincher\'s best - actually his only truly great film, sadly.

the movie is great indeed, but maybe he\'s got a point - considering all three actors act in their comfort zone of their personas: Downey Jr being himself (a drunk and a douche), Gyllenhaal being "the one who tries, relentlessly, to understand something", while Ruffalo plays the old "shy-calm-righteous-sensitive guy".
I don\'t think they are in their top in this film, but don\'t compromise it either.
