James Cameron Reveals ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ Working Title & More Details

Headed to screens this fall, producer James Cameron, who is doing the rounds of press for “Alita: Battle Angel” which he oversaw, has revealed details on the upcoming sixth “Terminator” film. It even has a new working title, albeit one that’s not necessarily official right now. “We’re calling it Terminator: Dark Fate.’ That’s our working title right now,” he said in an interview with Yahoo.

Cameron shed light on the new film directed by Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) as well. A VFX whiz before he turned director, Cameron and David Fincher have been championing Miller for years, going so far as campaigning to 20th Century Fox to get “Deadpool” made when the film was an uncertainty.

Wisely, Cameron said he understood that while he would oversee and guide the new “Terminator” film—he could not direct it due to his “Avatar” commitments— whoever its direct was would have to ultimately run the show. Thus, he stuck Tim Miller in a room with Linda Hamilton and hoped they would find a way forward for the new idea and screenplay.

They did of course, but Cameron explained that he had a couple ground rules for his franchise for his involvement. I can’t be involved in this film at all if Arnold is not in it,” he told them as he set up their meeting, insisting Arnold Schwarzenegger had to reprise his role as the iconic T-800 in some shape or form. “Arnold’s back and he is bad and he is a different Terminator than you’ve seen before,” he said (Schwarzenegger has dual roles in the movie).

Miller and Hamilton came back to Cameron and said, “We want to pretend those other films don’t exist and we want to continue on from ‘T2’ and I said, ‘alright, I’m your guy,’” he explained noting that “under different circumstances I might have been tempted to direct another Terminator film, but I’m booked.”

As is the structure of a lot of these legacy-quels films, Cameron teased a passing of the baton, from Hamilton to the new females at the center of the story, namely Natalia Reyes, and Mackenzie Davis (Diego Boneta also stars as new Terminator) suggesting Sarah Connor would be “maybe less likable, but strong.”

Describing it as a very “female-centric” film he said, “Fans are going to want to see [Sarah Connor] again, and they’re going to want to see what time and dealing with these tragic futures has done to her.The character has apparently hardened over the years, but “is there to kick ass and take names.”
