The prequels are terrible movies – no argument there – but each one experimented with visual ideas and something new.
The Force Awakens was elaborately repeating what had already been done with a few cosmetic changes. Did you like Darth Vader? Well how about Darth Nephew? You like that Death Star? Here’s a planet sized Death Star? And how about Yoda? Who doesn’t love Yoda? Lady Yoda! Boom.
The Force Awakens is a better movie, not by much but better, but it’s visually unimaginative.
Hopefully Rian Johnson will do something with Part 8.
