But the scene in the lab, in my opinion, was Oscar-worthy. Some serious acting going on there.

I’d say that they didn’t miss the mark for it was just what they wanted in the first place. Some might find it excessive or rather weird, specially in contrast with the other tones in the film (for there are several!), or not, but I think that was the whole point.
