"watching The Last Jedi you can sense Rian Johnson trying to, as Kylo Ren says to, "let the past die". It's a theme that resonates throughout the film."

I think the theme of "letting the past die" is directly tied to the character arcs of the Luke, Rey and Kylo but is NOT challenging Star Wars lore. Quite the contrary.

Luke tries to let the Jedi order die with him but he can't do it.

Kylo thinks literally killing the past is the way forward but looks increasingly unstable. He tries to kill Luke and it causes him to be fooled at the end by him.

Rey lets her need for her past, dominate her present. She looks for people to believe in Han, Luke, even Kylo because she had no parents to believe in her.

Luke, Kylo, and Rey all fail in learning to live with their past but our protagonists learn to ACCEPT it and our antagonist continues down the dark path of DESTROYING it.

What is this telling us? It's telling us that we have to accept what has gone before, (previous films) and not throw them away, but we need to move on into new unchartered waters by learning from our mistakes.

I think people are reading the wrong messages from TLJ. Rian wrote a love letter to its origins and tried to boost its vitality.

Abrams is a tool. Point out any Star Wars movie where there wasn't a strong female presence. I didn't like TLJ simply because the way Luke and Snoke were killed off. Maybe they'll have a surprise for us in the third film, but I'm readying myself for disappointment again.

Poor JJ.

I liked Force Awakens, which I'm pretty sure had a female in the lead role.

I loathe The Last Jedi, not because of female characters, but because it is AWFUL!!!!!!!!

I was more bothered that there were no men given positions of power in the Resistance. They even had to kill Ackbar so Laura Dern could have something to do.

Equality would mean equal, as in, having power on both sides.

I like women just fine, and I even liked TLJ just fine while watching it, but the moralizing in the film is obvious and poorly handled.

Sorry - I liked Jedi and also Ridley & her portrayal of her character. But crying Me Too or racism as a way to diffuse any other opinion than yourself ? Sorry JJ Don't know if you actually said anything of the kind, but folks were dissing you long before these Pop Culture Hot buttons flared up. Use another argument if in fact that is what you really said.

This article is truly bizarre. The writer is totally extrapolating. Abrams isn’t remotely saying in that quote that all those who hate the film do so only on a gender basis. Gosh, I always treasured The Playlist for slightly more incisive and thoughtful journalism than this.

The people who didn't like the fact that most of the new characters in TLJ were female should be prepared to be butthurt again. With Carrie dying and Laura Dern not being in the next one, most of the new characters in the final one will likely be female as well.

Okay, Jordan, Luke tossing a light saber is sacrilege, but abandoning his family and the rebellion, disappearing for years, nobody complained about that. It takes only a little light digging to discovering festering hordes of cretinous misogynist "fanboys" shitting all over female characters on social media. Abrams and Johnson were fans of Star Wars since their theatrical release. JJ is absolutely correct in his diagnosis. Repeated viewings reveal TLJ to be one of the most reverential and lovingly made gems at the top of an otherwise deeply compromised saga of films. Abrams TFA makes up for its lack of originality with one of the slickest, most enjoyable entries in the series also. I come across world class assholes who disrespect the female characters and the actresses portraying them every day on instagram, and their reasoning is just as weak as the examples cited in this article.

Oy! Because he had a lame story line, made The Force Awakens totally irrelevant, and made Yoda and Luke look like idiots how is it I'm threatened by a woman? It's easy especially in this woke state of "metoo" to make us think a poorly directed movie was because we are misogynistic mouth breathers.
