The superhero boom is just getting started. To fight possible superhero fatigue, studios will just raise the bar further. The way technology advances, something done five years ago is passe. Aside from new films, rebooting is a way to reinvigorate. Get ready for the 100th batman and 100th superman film coming next year….. (the second restart in the last 4 years for that character, remember Superman Lives?) Then expect flash and wonder woman to surely follow. DC is going to enter the frey to compete with Marvel. Studios are looking for the next tentpole franchise. You can\’t just go back to the standard die hard or leathal weapon action/fantasy fare after audiences have got a taste of superheroes. Like I said this is just the beginning. This next ten years will dwarf the last ten, out.

I think thor and green lantern will be huge X-men and cap will also be hits. Was worried about green lantern but seeing some of the concepts has turned me. Just hope it works

2011 will be the year the superhero bubble bursts. So many of these films will bomb that studios will have to rethink their knee-jerk reaction of making a movie out of any comic book that falls open in front of them. Maybe then they\’ll start spending money on some intelligent films.

I\’m sort of with Scott on the 3D issue. Going on a sense of people more than statistics, I just think it\’s too thin a gimmick to sustain blockbuster strength. Sure, everybody loved \”Avatar\”, but has anything since really grabbed people the same way?

On a somewhat related note, I\’ll be very interested to see how things play out for Marvel over the next two years. Save \”Iron Man\”, they haven\’t really struck a chord with audiences for a longass time. If one of the next wave doesn\’t really hit – and I think we can probably rule out Thor and Cap for that – my call is their movie heyday is essentially over. Then again, I wouldn\’t count on that meaning they\’ll stop making flicks; in both comics and film, Marvel have pretty much always had dollar-sign eyes. No loyalty to anybody: see Kirby and Ditko back in the day, and Favreau now.

I think you mean it grossed $100 million less than Dead Man\’s Chest (domestically). AWE is #2 in domestic gross by about $5 million over the original and was a bigger worldwide success by about $300 million.

i think what might happen instead of \”casualties\” per se, is films being bumped an entire year into 2012. We saw it happen with The Wolfman, The Adjustment Bureau and Green Zone (look how those turned out), so it\’s very plausible it\’ll happen again to some of these pictures.

i have a strong feeling that some studios will be in financial crisis even more next year like MGM. They are making too much super heroes movies, people actually need to see some original project. last year Inception saved that desastrous summer 2010. The only one action scy fy movie that i want to see is TRON LEGACY it took almost years to made the movie. Thor, Green Lantern and others are made in the hurry and that\’s not good.

Been saying this for two years (been making the Iron Man 3: The Avengers joke since the Thor trailer crapped on the bed in July). There\’s a decent shot that we\’ll see a $50 million opening for at least one film every weekend from May until late July. Of course, most of these films are so expensive that they\’ll HAVE to open to $50 million just to survive. Me thinks this will be a summer of reckoning, as audiences overdose on 3D (and revolt over having so few options to see a given movie in 2D), and the studios realize that they can\’t survive when every single one of their movies has to make $400-600 million just to break even. Paramount seems to be getting out of the blockbuster game, so maybe Disney will be the only \’only tentpoles, all the time\’ studio in a few years. That would be nice.
