I disagree VEHEMENTLY with this logic. KYLO REN should be hated by fans based on his dialogue, interactions, and character development. Having Kyle "OFF" a beloved character is a CHEAP WAY to get the villain "heat" ---- in fact it was the CHEAPEST route possible. Han was worth MORE to the franchise than to be a "sacrifice" to Kyle Ren and I will forever RESENT this decision.

pushing comment down off main page.
further down, further down

I did feel angry at the time sitting in the cinema, that Han (the greatest movie hero from my childhood) was given such a brutal ending! I came out feeling it was too soon, as we had just been reintroduced to this legendary character again after 30 years...and also wondered whether he could have had a more heroic ending. On reflection, it was a bold move by JJ, and definitely made the discoverey of Luke at the end all the more sweeter. I guess we\'ve read for years that Harrison wanted to off Solo, so it should have been expected at some point. It does make for one of the most memorable scenes in the Star Wars series....hey, at least we still have Indy!!

Pushing comments down off the main page because of spoilers

Harrison Ford doesn\'t like Star Wars movies and probably had it in his contract that Han Solo had to die so he wouldn\'t have to come back for any more filming.

There is no better way to handle this. A truly central character dies, lending gravity to what is happening and what is to come. This decision also forever preserves Han as that lovable scoundrel with a heart that we\'ve grown to love, keeping him from falling from grace both in the coming films and also in our hearts if they were to make bad decisions with him. Well done, J.J. And company, for making a strong decision that played well in the movie and, while heartbreaking, will forever protect a beloved heroes memory.

JJ said that the force awakening needed to have consequences. Obviously, we see the force awakening in Rey\'s character, but we also see it happening in Kylo\'s character.
Through out the film he\'s asking questions about the force, the dark side, and the light. JJ makes a good point that there needed to be consequences coming from that. In his death, Han served a purpose in this film. He propelled Kylo\'s character, and in doing that, he propelled the story. Great insight by the writer\'s of a great film. Also, if we think about it, Luke\'s character and his actions (retreating into hiding) obviously propelled the story as well. The whole movie was based on a desperate search for Luke Skywalker.

"J.J. rightly asked, ‘What is Han doing in this movie?’ If we’re not going to have something important and irreversible happen to him, then he kind of feels like luggage. He feels like this great, sexy piece of luggage you have in your movie. But he’s not really evolving. He’s not really pushing the story forward.”
Let\'s do it to Luke instead.
Makes no sense.
