I write script coverage on a freelance basis for a number of production companies. I remember doing coverage on a script for The Beautiful Cigar Girl about a year ago. It was written by Steven Katz, the guy who wrote Shadow of the Vampire with Willem Dafoe. He kind of felt appropriate for the material. I think there were revisions by Stephen Jeffreys who wrote Depp’s The Libertine. Obviously, the period detail of New York and the horror was on point. I don’t remember anything about Stashower’s book. It might not be based on that. Katz took the film into the fantastical and definitely fictional. Also not sure about this story because the sound designer claims he's creating sounds for 1854 New York - Poe died in 1849.
