He's absolutely right. New characters would expand the scope of the universe. It was always fun to imagine that there were other adventures going on and that there were other equally exciting characters. Connecting it all to the Skywalkers reduces this. It seems silly and unimaginative to think they are the only people with exciting stories.

As a jumping off point for the new trilogy, I believe they have a purpose, so long as the film isn't all about them and the nonsensical "linking" Lucas felt compelled to do. Luke would become the Ben Kenobi wise old man, Leia the wise old politician and Han, well Han will continue to be Han-shoot FIRST and ask questions later!

I would disagree. The only real question is how good is the script and how well is it directed. Bringing back some of the older actors just adds incentive for those over age 40 who want to give up on the series. This would bring them back. I say it is win win.
