The original article doesn't cite ANY source whatsoever for that rumour and apparently no one cares to check, but it's all over the internet within seconds.
That local blog mentioned in the article above stated that Bale was there last week. Why would he drop out so suddenly? That doesn't make sense to me.

My first thought is that Bale was offered a once in a lifetime role – like what? – and had to tell Malick no, but isn't a role in a Malick film trump everything else? So I wonder what Bale is doing instead…if anything. Colin Farrell would have been better than Affleck, too. Maybe, I don't know, Bale is replacing Leo in Eastwood's Hoover? I could give a shit about Bennifer, but I was disappointed not to see Casey Affleck when they were making The Killer Inside Me.

However, I did not know Malick was from Bartlesville; that is awesome and makes me somewhat less ashamed to be an Okie. I hope Malick is planning on shooting here, because he'd likely be the first person ever to make Oklahoma look good on camera.

I live in Bartlesville, and know for a fact that the bureau held a meeting this week with people working on a film, and Ben Affleck made a suprise appearance. They have also openly solicited local houses over the past month to be used in shooting a film. About the only thing that makes sense is that Ben will also be in this movie. Of course when they actually start shooting is another matter…
