Yea, I saw Hurt Locker in theaters once and then on Blu Ray once. Like I said, I thought it was good, but nothing new. A cross between Blackhawk Down (action) and Tigerland (characters), which are both better movie in my opinion. If Renner could nab a Best Actor nom for that, I think Farrell should have totally got one for his breakthrough role too.

Avatar may be a long overdue movie which waited for the right technology but Hurt Locker is timely. The Samson and Goliath fight of these two movies is amazingly exciting not to mention that being ex husband and wife added to color to that night.

I agree that the Oscars (the show) weren't very good. Steve and Alec fell flat telling their 5th grade jokes (damn Helen Mirren...comon) and all the constant reiteration of the nominees got old. They would introduce them once, show clips, and then say them all again.

And I'll also agree The Hurt Locker is not the film everyone thinks it is. It was good, but Blackhawk Down was much much better.

Let's be honest with ourselves about one thing. The Hurt Locker was just as flawed as Avatar. Neither of them was bad, but neither of them was great. Posit all you want, but you know in your heart of hearts that that statement is correct.

i liked "avatar" or "hurt lockers" but "a serious man "or "an education " was better!

Personally, I really love how Avatar was really made. I rarely watch a movie twice or trice but I did watch Avatar four times without getting bored or what.

Tristan, I agree with everything you said (well, except for the Serious Man part!). I'm baffled by the love for Hurt Locker. While I thought it was a good movie, it wasn't particularly memorable and really doesn't hold up that well upon a second viewing.

I'm a huge fan of Bigelow (especially Near Dark) but I remain mystified as to what it is about Hurt Locker that lit such a fire under people. It's character arc (fatalistic maverick clashes with superior officer, gradually wins over his respect) is pretty familiar from war/action movies. Similarly, the style, gritty, visceral, handheld, while done very well done, is pretty much standard for action movies nowadays, no? I don't think the movie's suspence levels come anywhere near that of previous winner No Country for Old Men. Of this years Best Picture noms, I think both A Serious Man and Avatar were better films, and Basterds, while not better, was at least more thought-provoking and interesting.

If Bigelow teamed up with the Coens to combine The Hurt Locker with A Serious Man, it would have won every single award and been the greatest existential Jew war dramedy ever.
