An interesting thing to note about this article (the NYTimes one). It does not state whether the Hobbit will be shot in 3D or if it will be post-converted and our bet is the latter.

It'll be expensive enough as it is without shooting in 3D and shooting in 3D would signficantly jack up the budget price and what $500 million total? They're not gonna raise it.

They're gonna post-convert 3D-ize it and they'll say, "hey, that'll happen by end of 2012, almost 2013, post-conversion will be perfect by then."

In short, the folks who reckon that union thugs were behind the fire are probably smoking some of NZ's finest ...

The cause of the fire is still being investigated and the perimeter of the building is guarded. But,I seriously doubt that it's union thugs. The division is mostly actors equity/MEAA vs. everyone else and it is of particular strength up in Auckland (1 hour flight / 8 hours drive) not so much in Wellington.

If it is arson, the likely explanation would be bored kids.
