Got a Tip?

HBO Boss Tempers Expectations For ‘Mare Of Easttown’ Season 2 & Says It’s Up To The Creative Team

One of the best aspects of a prestige limited series in 2021 is a network or streamer can attract A-list talent for a short run of episodes. The bad part about that agreement is that there’s really no immediate chance that a successful limited series can be turned into an ongoing show, such as what happened with “Big Little Lies.” And when talking about the option of having more “Mare of Easttown,” HBO’s Casey Bloys is well aware that a Season 2 is only going to happen if the creative folks involved are willing to make it a reality.

Speaking at a recent press conference (via THR), HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer, Casey Bloys, talked about the upcoming slate of series that are bound for his premium network and streaming platform. And of course, when you talk about the future, people want to know about potentially more “Mare of Easttown,” which comes from creator Brad Ingelsby and star Kate Winslet. The series recently wrapped up its story and not only became yet another critical hit for HBO but also drew in large audiences, thanks in no small part to Winslet’s star power.

And when talking about the potential for more seasons of ‘Easttown,’ Bloys knows full well that it comes down to the desire of Ingelsby and Winslet, no matter how badly he would like to see it happen.

“I do think that people tend to think that those decisions are made like its ABC in the ’70s, where people are saying ‘we need more Mare! We need more Mare!’ and I promise you I am not pounding on the desk saying ‘get us more,’” Bloys explained. “It really is a conversation with Brad [Ingelsby], with Kate [Winslet]. I would rely on them coming to us saying ‘we think there’s more, here’s what it is.’”

He continued, “It is not a foregone conclusion that just because something does well that we have to do more. It really is case by case, but it starts with the creative team and what they want to do.”

It would probably be easier for Bloys to shrug off questions about “Mare of Easttown” Season 2 if he wasn’t the person who made “Big Little Lies” Season 2 happen with that all-star cast a couple of years ago. That series set the precedent of A-listers returning to a limited series for another season, and now, even if something is sold as “limited,” fans still have the idea in the back of their minds that it could continue.

But for “Mare of Easttown,” it appears that folks shouldn’t hold their breath for Season 2.
