I\’m too scared to buy the Blu Ray because I know one of the versions of it is terribly encoded and I don\’t want to risk buying the wrong version. Hopefully they release some kind of ultimate box set that comes with both versions of the film

'Gangs of New York' felt truncated, watered down, and compromised by the heavy hand of Weinstein, the workprint version mentioned that ran around twenty minutes longer was Scorsese's preferred cut – confiding to friends that very sentiment – and THAT'S the version that should have been released in cinemas in 2002, with the original Elmer Bernstein score included…

If they removed the narration, and significantly trimmed down Cameron Diaz's ridiculous presence, the movie could have been wonderful.

For me it's a shame… I haven't seen it in a while, but the climax felt a bit rushed! A similar story is Once upon a time in the west, it was released in Europe in it's longer version where it prospered but unfortunately for Leone it was dramatically cut for the US market and it felt rushed and basically halted his career. But since being released in it's full version all 2hours and 45min, it's one of the top ranked westerns of all history. Who knows how much better Gangs could have been!
