@ Ph0enicks: Not sure who you replied to, but you don\’t need to make movies to have and voice an opinion on how well an actor does or doesn\’t convince you, in movies that YOU pay to see. We all judge human behavior and decide whether it seems honest or fake, on a daily basis. The difference with movies is we pay to be convinced, and if we are or aren\’t, we should be free to say so. Now let me ask you, why do YOU feel you need to harass someone over their opinion, of someone else\’s work, that they\’ve paid to see (and I\’ve seen a lot of the movies he\’s been part of), and therefore have a right to comment on?

What Jake Gyllenhaal movies have you been watching? Nightcrawler was iconic, Jake does iconic roles well. Donnie Darko, Jack Twist, Jarhead, Lou Bloom. None of those character are yuppies. You are right Jake is not Ryan Gosling or Andrew Garfield, thank God.

I mean, your yardstick is like judging a great director should be more verite than formalist or stylist. Or truth only comes from refined gravitas, not visceral self-absorption. Creative choices serve their stories or product packaging, not an inflexible ideal of "good taste".

Gyllenhaal isn\’t the most naturalistic of his age group (of which Gosling, Garfield are), but he\’s capable of it when necessary (Enemy, End of Watch.) In the 2000s, depth is relative to the functions of male ingenues he played. Roles from the last 5 years, premised on the abstract or stoic (the 2 Villeneuve), and a satirical allegory that\’s expressionistic and stylized for a purpose. Southpaw is truly his first character to dig for self-reflection, and the farthest from his easy typecast of the vapid yuppie.

Yes, because I don\’t think Jake Gyllenhaal is even a very good actor. Too often forced and superficial. Moreover Southpaw looks like a bad movie and Harvey Weinstein always talks big, so I\’m not expecting much from this.

Gyllenhaal may be amazing in it, but I doubt the film will be that good. I agree with the other poster that Fuqua got lucky with one good movie and has been hacking it up ever since. Same with the writer of Training Day, David Ayer, although Fury was surprisingly decent.

Jake Gyllenhaal\’s performances of late are astounding! Right up there with Leo and Tom Hardy, for me. Nightcrawler was mesmerizing, more thrilling than most Marvel movies lol. That said, this is a pretty tired genre and Fuqua has only made one good movie in my opinion, Training Day 14 years ago
