This is the right way. Either do the thinly veiled insult right (e.g., "these glasses feel like a downs baby helmet strapped to my face") or don't do it at all.

This is the definition of trying too hard. Dial it down or dial it up, but don't commit to an insulting joke and then use politically correct language like "mentally challenged in some manner" to play off your stereotyping as anything other than what it is.
