That song was killing me too. It took me an hour to finally realize it sounded like a cover of Paper Tiger by Beck. Per Wikipedia and some other sites it sounds like Paper Tiger sampled Serge Gainsbourg's "Cargo Culte."

I'm not certain, but I think that's it, or maybe it's something else from Gainsbourg, likely off of Histoire de Melody Nelson.

Kudos to whoever for including Galaxie 500's "Strange" in the Noah Baumbach Soundtrack Series long before this film was even made. Not a total shot in the dark since Dean Wareham has worked with Baumbach before. But still…
