While i completely agree with your assessment of the film lacking as a character study, I disagree with your overall perspective. I saw the film at TIFF and thought it was outstanding precicely because it completely succeeded as a rousing advture. I don't believe the film tries to delve into character so much as tells the story, which I think was the right choice. And as an adventure story, it was really quite remarkable. I was on the edge of my seat and felt as much tension throughout as I felt when I first saw Jaws or even Open Water. You are absolutely correct, though, that it doesn't stand a hope in hell to win a Foreign Language Film Oscar – a category that typically embraces the "intellectual". Amour should have a lock there (and it deserves it), but I was nonetheless thrilled to see Kon-Tiki recognized in the category.

Nice review, I'm intrigued by this but mostly because it appears nominated out of nowhere. I'm a sucker for blonde men on boats.
