Reynolds was only miscast in terms of having to act in a river of crap being passed off as a script and direction. Reynolds carried the Lantern and I still watch it from time to time just because he brought his A-game despite what those behind the camera brought, er, shoveled.

What do directors do in Hollywood nowadays? I grew up in a time when directors were the dei ex machina of the film. The film was their baby, who already lived in their minds and the actors were the vessels who had to bring that baby to light. They went to extremes to obtain exactly what they were looking for and could do marvels even with non-professional actors taken from the street (or prison inmates, e.g. Cesare Deve Morire); imagine if the actors could impose their own idea of the characters they were interpreting. They still can\’t, in my opinion. This habit of blaming the actors is demented.
