It's a very sad fact that some people couldn't separate constructive criticism of the prequels with outright character assassination of their writer/director... and that totally unnecessary nastiness clearly has hurt George Lucas, and that's not a good reflection on some fans. Whatever criticism I have of the prequels is not personal against Lucas, he clearly made those films for the right reason, and I believe he tried his best in making them the best he could make them, but he surrounded himself with yes-men and paid employees, none of whom were going to tell him if something was ill-advised or just plain wrong (as evidenced in the 'making of' documentary on the Episode I DVD), and not having the trilogy plotted out in detail in advance, nor having the three respective films' screenplays co-written by able screenwriters during the pre-production process, nor having a strong outside editor who understood story structure, pace, and character performance through editing to help shape a tight and focused final cut... all these things contributed to the eventual resulting films, and how disappointed some fans felt in them, although none of that excuses the vile comments made about Lucas in forums over the years. The trouble I have with the upcoming new trilogy is they seemed to have been conceived as purely commercial entities, designed to keep Lucasfilm a viable and competitive commercial entity after it's founder's (well earned) retirement rather than a natural and organic continuation of a grander narrative, I've no doubt they'll be something pretty special, but it was Lucas who was telling everyone up until around 2010 that there would be no Episodes VII-IX, that "the story is finished" and there's nothing left to tell... and don't get me started on the release of the original Trilogy's theatrical versions (or qualitative lack thereof).
