Just to correct American Thrift Media: Anthony Hemingway has a strong TV directiing background having handled both character driven work for David Simon directing episodes of the Wire and special effects heavy work directing episodes of BSG. A great blend of experience to make the leap from TV to film. Also, I would add as a factual clarification that Hemingway is in fact African American.

Lucas Films is denying this story: (which is circulating throughout the internet):

"The story that is circulating about production on Red Tails is completely inaccurate," Lucasfilm told DS.

"George Lucas and Rick McCallum are very pleased with the work Anthony Hemingway did directing the film and additional shooting that is scheduled to take place was built into production before it began, as it is on all our films."

No offense to Tony Hemingway, but there are so many amazing young directors--and many are minorities too--who would have been much better at heading a big, historical movie like this.

What was Lucas thinking? Hemingway must have made a great pitch with his vision for it but been unable to follow through.

Steve McQueen, Kevin MacDonald or even Allen Hughes could have done this really well.
